So here are some goals for average career-oriented individuals that I think are reasonable and attainable:
- Be able to do at least 10 push-ups, 10 pull-ups, and 20 squats with good form. These are basic exercises that work your major muscle groups and improve your strength and endurance. You can do them anywhere and anytime, and they don’t require any equipment. If you can’t do them yet, start with easier variations and work your way up.
- Be able to run a mile in under 10 minutes. Running is one of the best ways to improve your cardiovascular health and burn calories. It also boosts your mood and mental clarity. You don’t need to run marathons or sprints, just a moderate pace that gets your heart rate up and makes you sweat. If you’re not used to running, start with walking and jogging intervals and gradually increase your speed and distance.
- Have a waist circumference of less than half your height. This is a simple way to measure your body fat percentage and assess your risk of obesity-related diseases. For example, if you’re 6 feet tall (72 inches), your waist should be less than 36 inches. To measure your waist, wrap a tape measure around your belly button level and exhale. Don’t suck in your stomach or pull the tape too tight. If your waist is too big, you need to lose some fat by eating less and moving more.
- Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber that support your immune system, digestion, skin, eyesight, and overall health. They also fill you up with fewer calories and help you control your appetite. Try to eat a variety of colours and types every day, preferably fresh or frozen rather than canned or dried.
- Drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Water is essential for every function of your body, from regulating your temperature to flushing out toxins to lubricating your joints. It also helps you stay hydrated, energized, and focused. Drinking water can also help you lose weight by replacing sugary drinks and reducing hunger. Aim for at least eight glasses per day, more if you exercise or sweat a lot.
These are some simple but effective goals for average adult fitness that you can start working on today. They don’t require any special equipment, skills, or supplements. They just require some consistency, discipline, and motivation. If you follow them regularly, you’ll see positive changes in your body and mind in no time.
